A Problem or a Lesson?

There was some great feedback to last week’s blog about Adam. The topic was about a man in “crisis” and how he took steps forward and what he learned during that experience, about how to overcome the overwhelm that comes with facing a transition and just wishing to run away. When we are faced with an issue, the first question we can ask is how huge is it really?

The truth of how huge anything really is, is relative to the person. For example, driving from London to Nottingham would seem impossible to someone who has recently passed their driving test and is worried about motorway driving. But for someone who is a competent driver, it is fairly easy. A few weeks ago I got ready to leave my house, got into my car and plugged in my Tom Tom.  The green light on the lead didn’t light up.  The gardener had arrived so I asked if he could try it in his van.  No green light.  Time was moving on and I’d promised to collect someone at 9am in London.  I would normally have printed an AA routefinder to the address, but my computer was in the repair shop!

The situation seemed hopeless and I was ready to cry (which would not have helped change the situation).  My alternative was to telephone my brother who is a brilliant navigator so I could drive my car with his guidance.  Unfortunately I took the wrong route and found myself in Hackney which has T-junctions with no road signs!  Eventually with my brother’s help and the person who I was collecting, also ringing me and guiding me, I eventually found myself very near to the address.  I slowed down to allow a bus to move in front of me, when BANG the driver behind hit me!  My mobile phone and bag flew to the floor!  I registered that I’d been hit, put on my  hazard lights and got out to inspect the damage.  His vehicle was completely squashed, but he wasn’t hurt.  I was slightly shaken, but not hurt. The damage to my rear door was minimal.  It was now beginning to rain!  He suggested I sit in my car while he rang his office to get all the necessary details.  Eventually, we politely swapped details and I continued on my journey, suggesting that he paid more attention and to take care.  What could have been a huge “road rage” after the difficulties I had faced, was unnecessary.  Taking everything into persepective, no-one was hurt and the damage to our vehicles could be repaired.  Two hours after I’d left home, I arrived at my destination! The person I collected was a party organiser and he decorated my home beautifully for my special birthday and played a very special part on the day.  He was an angel.

Sometimes what we think is overwhelmingly impossible is something that is just beyond our abilities in that moment and it has a gift for us, to allow us to expand our energy. The question for us is what do we need to learn to overcome this situation and create the way to resolve it, which may mean we learn to do something new or learn to ask for help and let the Universe step in and help us. What problem are you facing this week? How huge does it seem and what is its gift to you?
